Service Issues Resolved Mon, November 26, 2007 7:04 pm

Starting at the end of last week until today, Virpus Networks was experiencing service issues which include packet loss and the network going up and down sporadically. After performing a long and thorough investigation, we have been able to track down the person who was initiating the attacks and have formally filed a complaint with the appropriate authorities. We were also able to track down how the user gained access, and have fixed the security issue at this time.

The attack was based on an IRC script designed to attack other networks. The script was uploaded on multiple instances within our network and executed which at that time ate up our entire pipeline of 100 Mbps resulting in packet loss and the network going up and down as said above.

I would like to apologize to you for the inconveniences and downtime you have experienced, and would like thank you for your patience during the past week. We are very thankful to have a loyal client base, and to have you as a customer. These events are unfortunate, however we have secured ourselves from issues like this coming up again. I know that this has been stressful for our team as we worked to resolve the issue, and I'm sure it has also been stressful on your end as well.

Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding, and we're looking forward to a bright future with continuing to serve your hosting needs.

Warm Regards,

Kenneth Odem

Network Issues Sat 11/24/2007

Today, we had sporadic outages throughout the day. This was due to a virtual environment on one of our nodes sending out traffic that used our entire pipeline (100Mbps). We have immediately acted by placing all nodes at 10Mbps on the switch, instead of 100 Mbps.

We are still investigating why this continues to happen. We understand that this downtime is completely unacceptable, and are actively working to resolve this issue.

At about 10 AM Central Time, it was detected that we were having sporadic packetloss on the network. It was later investigated that this was a result of a Denial of Service attack. After we were able to find the attacking IP address, our Upstream provider was able to block the IP, and the host of the offending IP was also contacted, which they stopped the processes causing such disruption. Services were restored at 5:30 PM Central Time.

We have already made a commitment for further network security enhancements to avoid such instances in the future and to quickly track down such issues.
